The Atlantic slave trade was the result of, among other things, labour shortage, itself in turn created by the desire of European colonists to exploit New World land and resources for capital profits. Native peoples were at first utilized as slave labour by Europeans until a large number died from overwork and Old World diseases.

When the Spanish first invaded the new world, they attempted to enslave the Native American populations to do their manual labour. but they found that they died due to no immunity to European diseases. Dutch traders offered to bring over African slaves who were more or less immune to many European disease, and the cross Atlantic slave trade began.
